Forum Title: Fireproof Construction Of Bookcase In Old Dumbwaiter?
I'm renovating an an old 4 family with a dumbwaiter shaft near the kitchens. I think the clever thing to do is to replace the current POS 24 x 36 door (wood with thin sheet steel bent over and nailed on it) with a bookcase, that can be removed to access the shaftway now a wire chase. I know I need to build this to firecode, but my local code office is a disaster where no one picks up the phone and messages are never returned. So does anyone have suggestions on what fire rating this needs, and will 1 or 2 layers of 3/4 fire treated plywood do it? I know 2 layers of 5/8 drywall would, but that would be a PITA to build. 3/4 I could just pocket screw together like a cabinet carcass, and then just screw to the doorway framing. Any advice appreciated.
